Manual grain mill buying guide

Clamp strength, burr type, effort and motorization options for power-free milling.

A stable mount is part of the mill

Fine flour requires sustained torque, so a light counter edge or weak clamp can make a capable mill frustrating. Measure the bench thickness and leave enough crank clearance for a full rotation.

Burr material changes the ingredient list

Stone burrs are commonly selected for dry grain and fine flour; steel burrs may broaden coarse or oily-ingredient use on models designed for it. Never infer compatibility from burr material alone—use the manual.

Be realistic about effort

Manual throughput varies with grain, texture and operator. If you expect several cups of fine flour each week, evaluate flywheel size, optional pulley systems and manufacturer-supported motorization before buying.
