How to clean a grain mill

Dry-cleaning routines and manufacturer-specific limits for burrs and housings.

Unplug and follow the model manual

Cleaning access and allowed tools vary by mechanism. Disconnect power, let the machine cool and use only the disassembly steps the manufacturer documents.

Keep water away unless expressly allowed

Many mill chambers, burrs and impact heads are intended for dry cleaning only. Brushes, a small approved purge quantity or removable dry cloths may be specified; water can damage stones, metal and motors.

Inspect before the next batch

Check the hopper, outlet, seals and collection parts for residue, insects or damage. If the mill handled an allergen, the manual—not a casual wipe—must determine whether the cleaning method is adequate.
